How can we reduce our carbon footprint?

The Government has set its own target at a 15% reduction between 2005/2006 and 2010.  The carbon footprint is a product of the mileage travelled and the CO2 emission output of the car.  Therefore there are only two ways to meet your target; reduce miles travelled and lower the CO2 emissions.

By converting drivers into newer cars the CO2 emissions will fall; this is because technology has improved engine efficiency to such a level that in less than four years the emissions for a typical small car have reduced from 165 to 135 grams per kilometre.

The Energy Saving Trust uses a notional emission value of 207.5 grams for older cars.  Therefore by taking employees out of six year old cars and putting them into new lease cars, the CO2 emissions could reduce significantly.

With the introduction of our Travel Policy and a reduction in the incentive to travel, business mileage could easily reduce by 10%.  If these two factors were implemented the carbon footprint would reduce by over 26%
